May 2010 Newsletter

Happy May! With the weather getting warmer, many of us are already in our gardens planting seeds to yield vegetables, fruit and flowers for our enjoyment later in the season. A few of you have mentioned sore muscles from bending, squatting and digging.

We can liken our yoga practice to tending a garden. Intention is the seed for our yoga practice but before a seed can germinate it must be nourished by the earth and water just like we nourish the vast garden of the self with the gifts of nature - our connection to the earth, movement, food, fresh air and water. Our passion for life is like the fiery element of the sun helping us grow and nurture ourselves and our yoga.  Let the summer be an opportunity to continue to grow your yoga practice. Live with intention, nourish yourself and align with your passions.

Pose of the month (Upward Facing Bow, Wheel Pose)
Urdhva Dhanurasana (OORD- vah don-your-AHS-anna  urdhva  =  upward   dhanu  =  bow asana = posture) requires inner resolve and outer strength to master. The pose itself is grown from the ground up, starting with smaller backbends, then nourishing the expansion into full wheel.  As you practice Wheel prep and Wheel with steadfast intention, imagine your arms and legs strong like bamboo sprouting up from the earth, your back body lifting you and blossoming your heart towards the sun.
Urdhva Dhanurasana can benefit us in the following ways:
Stretches the chest and lungs
Strengthens the arms and wrists, legs, buttocks, abdomen, and spine
Stimulates the thyroid and pituitary
Increases energy and counteracts depression
Therapeutic for asthma, back pain, infertility, and osteoporosis

Are you looking for something to do for a date night or perhaps you'd like to treat your mom to something different for Mother's Day?  On Saturday May 8th from 7p.m. to 9 p.m. we are holding a special and fun partner yoga class. In this class, we will use the support of a partner to build a foundation and take us deeper into asana with trust, ease and fun. We will do the poses together - assisting each other through the touch of hands, feet, body, breath, eye contact, and wordless communication. Your partner can be your lover (the date night!), your friend, a family member (mom - because Sunday May 9th is Mother's Day), someone you just met - anyone you are comfortable with or, if you want to push yourself - someone who you are not comfortable with!

Many of you will remember our instructors for this class – Mandy Sheen and John Buchanan who both used to teach at Heart Centre Yoga! The cost for this class is $30 + gst for the two of you, (that works out to $15.75 each). Please pre-register by calling the studio (604) 294-4954 or emailing info@heartcentreyoga.ca

Dr. Ann Izard is a doctor of Chiropractory at the Burnaby Integrated Wellness Clinic in The Heights.  Ann will teach us the basic anatomy and musculature of the thoracic and lumbar spine (mid and low back). She will also discuss common low back complaints and conditions  as well as postural issues and repetitive actions which can affect these conditions. Ann will teach us some lumbar stability exercises, scapular (shoulder) retraction exercises and stretches. In the last ½ hour of this workshop, Debbie (of Heart Centre Yoga) will help you explore how to take this knowledge and awareness into a yoga practice and review some yoga postures that incorporate these movements.  NOTE:  It is not necessary to have experienced Yoga to take this workshop. If your back hurts, you may find value in the workshop contents and we urge you to attend.

Looking for feedback...

If you're interested in a field trip to the Burnaby Farmer's market on a Saturday morning, let us know - we can carpool and explore the offerings from the local farms.  Eat local!

Are you interested in learning to kayak?  We're thinking about a yoga retreat that could include a kayak trip. To ensure everyone is prepared, we'd like to organize a group kayak lesson sometime soon.  If this is of interest, please let us know.
