Newsletter - January 2010

Hello Everyone -  friends, neighbours , fellow yogis and yoginis,

It feels like the holiday season has flown by so quickly and sent us soaring into the new year. Before you read on, I will extend thanks to Ariel and Angela for the inspirations in the opening of this newsletter.

It is exciting that Ariel has been inspired to choose Garudasana or Eagle pose as the "Posture of the Month" for January. Did you know that this amazing bird has vision of four times the most perfect human eye, and transparent eyelids that blink away dust while allowing continuous vision? It can spot a rabbit running a mile away.  Ariel wrote in her email to me "I’m looking forward to seeing like an eagle this month and expanding my perception"; what a great intention for moving forward with clarity into the new year!

Angela opened our New Years Day Workshop on the subject of 'the power of intention' with the following message: "Oftentimes we place resolutions for the new year in terms of what we feel we are lacking which ultimately takes away from our own personal power. Intentions stem from our own values and truths as a way to ground us in the present moment reflecting that which is most important to us. Our goals naturally flow from a place of positive intention"...

Encouraging you all to embrace your inner Garuda and move into the new year and new decade by "setting your intention with your own truth in mind. Begin from a place of openness, and let your intention be your guiding light as a tool to create greater sense awareness, to enhance your connections with those around you, to experience the wonder and joy of life fully and completely."

Namaste,

Debbie

* A big official welcome to Andrew Colyn! Andrew has been subbing some classes for us recently and he will be taking over the Monday night classes from Ariel on January 11th, 2010.  Ariel has made a difficult decision to give up these classes to find more balance with family life and will continue to teach at Heart Centre Yoga on Wednesday and Friday mornings. Many thanks to Ariel for her time and guidance over the past months in teaching the Monday night classes.
Andrew extends his bio so you can get to know a little more about him: "Lost on the pebble beaches of the Atlantic Ocean, Andrew’s path led him West, past the mountains and to the shores of the Pacific. That journey seems short compared to his journey on the mat. He began his training at the Salt Spring Centre of Yoga where he completed the 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Classical Ashtanga & Hatha. Pushing to the edges of his perceived limits, challenging his focus and stamina he went on to complete Catherine Munro’s Power Vinyasana 60 Hour Certification. Andrew’s newest quest found him after completing Desiree Rumbaugh’s 16 Hour Anusara Workshop. Drawing upon his resources to maintain an edge, daring to leap, then working to do less, finding compassion, being more tolerant in practice and in life he just completed his 200 Hour Anusara Teacher Training and now works towards his Anusara Inspired and Certified Status.

In the studio Andrew strives to demonstrate the safest, most pure way of practicing asana and pranayama that meets each practitioner's needs and desires through body alignment, bio-mechanics and opening to grace. He finds a place of both comfort and intensity, right on the cusp, seeking to find or build experiences, relationships, connections, and wisdom."

* Kirtan: Saturday January 23, 2010 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Come out and sing!
"The words of these chants are called the divine names and they come from a place that's deeper than our hearts and our thoughts, deeper than the mind. And so as we sing them they turn us towards ourselves, into ourselves. They bring us in, and as we offer ourselves into the experience, the experience changes us. These chants have no meaning other than the experience that we have by doing them. They come from the Hindu tradition, but it's not about being a Hindu, or believing anything in advance.  It's just about doing it, and experiencing. Nothing to join, you just sit down and sing." Krishna Das

If you like to reserve time ahead in your calendar, the following month Kirtan will be held on Saturday February 20, 2010 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
